What Is Coaching?

Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

What Is Compassion Fatigue?

A type of burnout that affects caregivers and people in the helping professions (helpers). Without intervention a negative transformation ofworld view and hopelessness can result. According to Dr. Charles Figley, who coined the term, Compassion fatigue isa state experienced by those helping people in distress; it is an extremestate of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helpedto the degree that it is traumatizing for the helper.

The helper, in contrast to the person(s) being helped, is traumatized or suffers through the helper's own efforts to empathize and be compassionate. Often, this leads to poor self care and extreme self sacrifice in the process of helping. Together, this leads to compassion fatigue and symptoms similar to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This quote comes from an interview Dr. Figley did for Medscape. Read the entire interview

How it works

Three 45 minute coaching sessions per month, generally taking place by phone, but I’m happy to meet clients in person if geography permits. I have an office in Kingston, Ontario

On-going monthly support: Clients have unlimited access to coaching via email sessions. Clients are also free to call between sessions for little motivation inoculations.  Having a coach means having someone in your corner who has an investment in you meeting your personal and professional goals.

Because each client is unique there is no one way to approach coaching.  Some clients have not needed three sessions per month so they prefer to stretch them out to cover 6 weeks or even three months. As long as that doesn’t interfere with you reaching your goals it’s fine with me.
The path to burnout recovery involves making meaningful changes in a supportive environment. I work with my clients to find realistic ways to recover from career-related burnout.
